![]() ![]() Remember if it walks, squawks, like a duck, is a duck. Shoots like a 1911 (cut me some slack on the trigger pull), feels like a tiny 1911, locked and cocked the only way to carry a pistol, is stupid accurate with a 3.1” barrel, balanced like a 1911. Checks every box on my complicated list and even added things I didn’t know I’d appreciate. I had zero issues with trigger reset and I prefer it, it’s a very deliberate action. For me it’s a natural extension of my hand. Taking cost completely out of the equation I shoot this micro 9 as well as any other out there and frankly a Hell of a lot better than some full size FN’s, Wilson Combat, etc. Perfection is a literal impossibility but with the S&W CSX I’m as close too it as I can ever expect it to be. However I feel I’ve found the holly grail, at least for me. The arsenal I’ve amassed wasn’t by desire but rather good intentions that weren’t at all that good. It’s a continuous process of if I get something I have to give up something. It’s really going to help me by adding a little organization to my keys. Once the paint dried, the project was complete! Pretty simple right? Here are some pics of the finished DIY Key Holder. It worked okay, but a stencil brush would have been better. I tried using a Q-tip for this because the space that needed paint was pretty small. I placed the stencil on the top of the joined boards and painted with some black craft paint I already had on hand. ![]() If you don’t have a Silhouette, you could cut out your own stencil or buy a pack of letters and match them up. I designed the word KEYS in a font I wanted and cut it out. I decided to make a stencil on my Silhouette. When the cup hooks dried, I just screwed them in.Įven though its pretty obvious what this is when keys are hanging on it, I wanted to give it a little detail. I placed the holes in a pattern that worked for me, but you could place the holes anywhere you wanted to. While those dried outside, I drilled pilot holes into the 1×3 boards. I didn’t want them to be white on the key holder, so I just stuck them in a scrap piece of cardboard and spray painted them black. You can pick these up at any hardware store. I had a few cup hooks left over from my jewelry stand project, so I decided to use them for the key hooks. Now that the project is assembled, it’s time for the hardware. I can’t help the fact that Kona is the best stain color out there! One of these days I might actually branch out and use another color. Now that the boards are attached, I sanded them completely and stained. Just don’t be that creepy person who has a 50-pound keychain. This is plenty because there won’t be that much weight on the key holder. I attached the boards together with two pocket holes screws in each board. The backs of these boards are ugly and haven’t been sanded, but you will never see them. I needed an easy way to attach them together, so I decided to use pocket holes for this step. I started out with three 1×3 boards cut at 18″. I didn’t even have to cut off any length. Do you all remember my Arhaus inspired end table? I had some boards left over from that project that worked out perfect for the key holder. The best part of this project is what it is made of. I guess at some point in time I made copies like a mad woman for some reason (don’t ask me, I just live here). This problem calls for a DIY hanging key holder! Before starting this project, I went through and checked all of the keys I have to make sure they are still good. It’s like they just multiply in my house. Yay! I don’t know about all of you, but I have loads of keys for some reason. I hope everyone is having a good Friday so far. This 4.2 σ disagreement, known as the “Hubble tension”, has spurred much interest in modifications of the ΛCDM model capable of resolving it (cf. In particular, the Supernovae H0 for the Equation of State (SH0ES) collaboration 2, using Cepheid calibrated supernovae Type Ia, finds a much higher value of H 0 = 73.5 ± 1.4 km/s/Mpc. Although this ΛCDM model fits many observations exquisitely well, its prediction for the present-day cosmic expansion rate, H 0 = 67.36 ± 0.54 km/s/Mpc 1, based on precise cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation observations by the Planck satellite, do not compare well with direct measurements of the Hubble constant. ![]() We show explicitly that models which achieve a higher Hubble constant with lower values of matter density Ω m h 2 run into tension with the observations of baryon acoustic oscillations, while models with larger Ω m h 2 develop tension with galaxy weak lensing data.ĭecades of progress in observational and theoretical cosmology have led to the consensus that our universe is well described by a flat Friedman–Robertson–Lemaitre metric and is currently comprised of around 5% baryons, 25% cold dark matter (CDM), and 70% dark energy in its simplest form-the cosmological constant Λ. We demonstrate here that any model which only reduces r ⋆ can never fully resolve the Hubble tension while remaining consistent with other cosmological datasets. Many of them introduce new physics, such as early dark energy, modifications of the standard model neutrino sector, extra radiation, primordial magnetic fields or varying fundamental constants, with the aim of reducing the sound horizon at recombination r ⋆. A large number of amendments to the ΛCDM model have been proposed in order to solve this tension. The mismatch between the locally measured expansion rate of the universe and the one inferred from the cosmic microwave background measurements by Planck in the context of the standard ΛCDM, known as the Hubble tension, has become one of the most pressing problems in cosmology. ![]() ![]() As writers, there is no replacement for reading as a practice to become a better writer, but studying film or television can be just as instructive. The key is knowing how to analyze a story to understand what works in it and why. My students are analyzing the film The Princess Bride this week. They’ll deconstruct the plot, the characterization, the dialogue techniques, and more. Our goal isn’t to leave the film dissected like a frog pinned open, raw and disgusting. Our goal in analyzing the film (or any reading) is to deepen our understanding of the techniques the author, director, and actors use in telling an effective story. Seeing the craftsmanship deepens our appreciation for a story. What if that one question could make you a stronger reader, viewer, and ultimately writer? First, Recognize What You're Reading Ultimately we’re building models for our own work by asking one critical question. We draw inspiration from everything we encounter, but when we get serious about strengthening our writing, we need to step up our reading and viewing habits.īefore we ask our critical question, we have to begin by being honest about what we consume. ![]() What are we reading? Watching? Experiencing? If we want to be better writers, we have to make specific choices.Īnything I put into my mind and body will come out in some form. ![]() I consistently ask myself what I’m allowing to influence my work and life. I make space for reading and viewing that is less instructive, but I know I want to be challenged too and make choices accordingly. Of course, simply knowing the right question isn't enough. Here's the process I used with my students to learn from the master storytelling in The Princess Bride: 1. Identify what worked well in the book or show. Whether it is characterization, tension or a structure, figure out what was compelling.įor example, in The Princess Bride, students noticed the repeating quest structure and how it proves the hero’s new worth. ![]() If a writer is building a hero, what elements or episodes make the main character heroic? If a writer has created tension, what separate elements does she bring together to create tension? Is the protagonist working against a clock or is there dramatic irony and the audience knows he’s about to walk into a trap? How did Goldman elevate Westley’s status to make him heroic? He’s not a knight or noble, but his adventures and trials prove his worth. In our example, Westley (as the Man in Black) defeats Inigo, Fezzik, and Vizzini. How did Goldman do that? He set up three trials for Westley, each requiring a different skill: sword-fighting, strength, and wit. Once Westley reveals his true identity to Buttercup, they have to face three new trials as a couple in the fire swamp: flame spurts, lightning sand, and rodents of unusual size (R.O.U.S.). When they emerge victorious, they are both ready for the ultimate trial of another separation to prove their love. ![]() Now you have a list, and it’s time to apply what you’ve learned. If you have a lackluster hero, give him some trials to overcome (bonus if you can raise the stakes with each trial). He doesn’t have to win them all, but he’ll grow with each one. ![]() ![]() ![]() If we are solving for force and end up with units of millimeters per second, then we have made a mistake. ![]() Another way to check a solution is to check the units. They differentiate between velocity and acceleration and learn to correctly identify acceleration as a change in motion that may be caused by an unbalanced force acting on an object. When you kick a ball, forces start to act on it immediately. Newton’s First Law of Motion Newton’s first law of motion states that objects will continue what they are doing, either staying still or moving, unless they are acted upon by a force. That means if you kick a ball it will fly forever unless some sort of forces act on it As strange as this may sound, its true. In practice, intuition develops gradually through problem solving with experience, it becomes progressively easier to judge whether an answer is reasonable. In learning about Newtons first law of motion, students observe and discuss forces like drag, friction, and gravitational forces. The first law says that any object in motion will continue to move in the same direction and speed unless forces act on it. For example, it is reasonable to find that friction causes an object to slide down an incline more slowly than when no friction exists. In some cases, it is easy to tell whether the solution is reasonable. (If, for example, the system is accelerating horizontally, then you can then set ay = 0.) We need this information to determine unknown forces acting on a system.Īs always, we must check the solution. which is denser than the helium and therefore has more inertia than the helium. We have to consider the behaviour of the mass of air within the car. That's because in the case of the lighter-than-air helium balloon, simple Newtonian physics are out and fluid dynamics are in. The helium balloon, however, doesn't act like Newton said it would at all. ![]() The pendulum bob acts just as we would predict, swinging back when the van accelerates and forward when it decelerates. In the video below 'Smarter Every Day' host Destin explores these ideas in his minivan (accompanied by two adorable and incredibly polite little science helpers), first by using a pendulum bob, then by using a helium balloon. ![]() Your inertia becomes apparent.Ī sudden deceleration makes you fly forward in your seat, because your body was traveling at a particular speed and inertia makes it want to keep going at that rate. When the car accelerates, you (and all other objects in the car) appear to be pushed backwards because the car is moving faster than you were as a resting object. An easy way to demonstrate this is in the car. Newton's first law of motion tells us that an object at rest will stay at rest, while an object in motion will stay in motion, unless acted upon by an unbalanced force. you will continue to move at the speed the car was travelling at - until some force makes you stop. If you are travelling in a car without a seatbelt on and the car crashes. You need to understand that an object that is stationary or moving at a constant velocity has no net force acting on it - no acceleration - no force. On the surface of the Earth the nature of inertia is often masked by the effects of friction wich makes people (among them a lot of physics students!) believe (as Aristotle did) that if something is moving there must be a force acting - regardless of whether that movement was constant or not! Replace the 'Video number from menu.' with '1' and press 'enter or return'. In its simplest terms, inertia means something that is still and unmoving until a force is applied. You need to look at video number 1 for 'inertia'. Isaac Newtons 1st law of motion is the law of inertia. The term ' inertia' is s shorthand for 'the principle of inertia' as described by Newton in the full text of Newton's First Law of Motion which simply expressed means that an object that is not subject to any outside forces will move at a constant velocity, covering equal distances in equal times along a straight-line path - it will remain in its state of inertia. Newton's first law of motion states that an object will remain at rest, or continue to move at a constant velocity, unless a net force acts on it. ![]() ![]() ![]() Depending on the event’s purpose, the number of seats allocated to each table may differ, generally ranging from 6 to 10 seats.
